MIDAS project

We are glad to announce that BYTEK has been selected as one of the 12 third-party projects funded under HEDGE-IoT Open Call 1, chosen out of 147 applications from 30 Horizon Europe-associated countries.

HEDGE-IoT (Holistic Approach towards Empowerment of the DiGitalization of the Energy Ecosystem through the adoption of IoT solutions) is developing a novel Digital Framework that deploys IoT technologies across the energy value chain, from behind-the-meter devices to TSO-level systems, combining edge and cloud intelligence, federated AI, and semantic interoperability to deliver distributed, scalable, and secure energy services. Through Open Call 1, selected third-party projects build on this foundation and validate their solutions in real-world demonstration environments.

Our proposal, MIDAS (Modular lightweIght DAta Space connector), addresses Topic 14 of the call: Integration of Data Space Connectors compliant with the new Data Space Protocol, showcasing scalability and technology agnostic connectivity. We will integrate MIDAS, a lightweight, edge-capable dataspace connector, into the HEDGE-IoT ecosystem, demonstrating genuine technology diversity and standards-based interoperability.Starting from a working implementation already tested in demonstration environments, we will connect MIDAS with HEDGE-IoT’s existing connectors and validate complete data exchange across all four energy dataset types defined by the project.

The immediate impact is proving that HEDGE-IoT’s architecture supports heterogeneous implementations, as the Data Space Protocol standard promises. The broader impact is enabling dataspace participation by resource-constrained actors currently excluded by heavy infrastructure requirements, supporting a distributed energy system where thousands of small participants, not just large utilities, can share data.Because MIDAS implements the Dataspace Protocol 2025-1-RC1, its replication potential extends well beyond HEDGE-IoT: its standards-based, technology-agnostic, lightweight design makes it suitable for any dataspace ecosystem following the same standard, including other IoT-intensive sectors such as smart cities or industrial IoT.
